Weehawken is on the southern end of the 180-foot-high cliffs known as the Palisades. While its earlier residential and commercial growth took place atop those cliffs, in the last decade there has been extensive development on the waterfront, giving those who find their way to this Hudson County town of about 14,000 ample choices of where to live in its 1.4 square miles. Divided not only by the highlands and lowlands, Weehawken is also bisected by Interstate 495 and the helix entrance to the Lincoln Tunnel. So the town has several distinct neighborhoods: King’s Bluff, at the edge of the cliffs; Uptown, with the main commercial activity along Park Avenue; the Heights, above the Lincoln Tunnel entrance, with many two- and three-family houses; and the Shades, on the southern waterfront, where new housing has been built and older homes are getting a face-lift. From the mouth of the Lincoln Tunnel, driving into the city takes less than 10 minutes when there is no traffic. Residents can also take the New York Waterway Ferry (with terminals at Port Imperial and Lincoln Harbor), New Jersey Transit bus No. 128 or the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line (with two stops in Weehawken). A one-way ferry ride takes six to eight minutes. The bus takes 11 minutes and the light rail line to Hoboken takes seven minutes; transfers to the PATH train to Midtown Manhattan adding another quick 14 minutes. Weehawken is an optimal choice for anyone looking to be in close proximity to NYC or Hoboken without paying the higher prices. The community along the waterfront adds value from a perspective that it offers stunning views, walkways, restaurants, and living communities with quick access to the ferry. In 2017, Weehawken was listed as the hottest real estate market in New Jersey.
